Selecting Right Waterproofing Sealing Membrane For Tile Installations

Why Waterproofing Sealing Membranes Are Important for Tile Installation?

Mr. Maruthu Pandi, Business Head, PRONIL, India & South-East Asia

A waterproofing membrane is important in tile installations as it acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from seeping into the underlying floors and walls. This is particularly important in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies, where water exposure is frequent. Without a waterproof membrane, water can penetrate through the grout and tiles, leading to structural damage, mold growth, and deterioration of building materials. By providing an impermeable layer, the membrane ensures the longevity and integrity of the tiled surfaces, safeguarding the structure from costly repairs and health hazards associated with water damage.  Therefore, selecting a high-quality waterproof membrane designed for specific conditions, is important for durability and longevity of the tile installation and protecting the integrity of the building. One such product is PRONIL PROMEM 280F. ‘

It is a waterproof sealing membrane made of 2 outer layers of Non-Woven and 1 Inner layer of modified low density Polyethylene. It is used for protecting floors and walls under tile installation. It offers robust protection for tile installations due to its high weight per unit area, strong water resistance, excellent tensile strength, and good elongation properties. Its resilience to heat and UV rays, combined with strong air pressure and water column resistance, ensures a durable and effective barrier against moisture, extending the life of the tiled surfaces and preserving the structural integrity of the building.

Advantages of the PRONIL PROMEM 280F

  • High Weight per Unit Area: 280 gr/m² – Ensures robust durability and long-term performance.
  • Effective Water Resistance: EN 1928 Class W1, Water Column: 2.2 mm – Prevents moisture penetration and avoids water damage.
  • Strong Maximum Tensile Strength (MD): 87 N/15mm – Resists stretching and tearing for reliable waterproofing.
  • Strong Maximum Tensile Strength (CD): 43 N/50mm – Provides durability and resilience under physical stress.
  • Good Elongation at Break (MD): 80% – Accommodates movement and expansion without losing effectiveness.
  • Good Elongation at Break (CD): 110% – Handles structural movements without compromising waterproofing.
  • High Heat Resistance: Up to 90°C – Remains effective and durable in high-temperature conditions.
  • High UV Resistance: 500 hours – Ensures long-term performance under exposure to sunlight.
  • Air Pressure Resistance: 3 Bar – Withstands moderate air pressure changes.
  • High Water Column Resistance: 2.2 mm – Effective at handling various water exposure conditions.
  • Low Wind Permeability – Maintains integrity and performance in windy conditions.

Installation Method of PRONIL PROMEM

Step 1: Cut the Sealing Membrane

Cut the PRONIL PROMEM sealing membrane to fit the size of the subfloor or wall you are waterproofing.

Step 2: Prepare and Apply Tile Mortar

Mix the tile mortar to meet at least C2 quality standards as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the mortar evenly with a 5/32” x 5/32” (4 x 4 mm) notched trowel for consistent thickness.

Step 3: Install the Waterproof Membrane

Position the waterproofing membrane according to project specifications for either residential or commercial/public use. Start from the top and work downwards, applying from the center out to the edges.

Step 4: Seal the Membrane

  • For Residential Projects: Ensure the membrane is smooth with no air bubbles or wrinkles. Overlap seams by a minimum of 2 inches (5 cm) and remove excess mortar from the edges.
  • For Commercial/Public Projects: Use butt seams for the membrane installation, ensuring there are no air pockets or wrinkles. Remove excess mortar from the edges and apply a sufficient amount of fluid sealant at the seams to embed waterproof tape or flashing, creating a complete seal against water.

Step 5: Install PRONIL PROMEM Pipe Collars

Fit the PRONIL PROMEM pipe collars for various pipe diameters to prevent water ingress at bore packs. Available sizes include 100-110 mm, 75 mm, and 50 mm, with custom sizes available.

Step 6: Apply Tile Mortar and Begin Tiling

Once the membrane is installed, spread tile mortar over the surface and proceed with the tiling process.

Step 7: Seal Transitions

Seal the junctions between the wall and floor with silicone on both sides to ensure a watertight seal.
