Delhi has received a major road infrastructure upgrade with the inauguration of the Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor and the Mukarba Chowk underpass. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the projects on September 29, along with laying the foundation stones for two additional road projects. The four projects together involve an investment of more than Rs 1,941 crore.
Barapullah Phase 3 Connects East and South Delhi
The Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor provides a signal-free connection between Mayur Vihar Phase 1 in East Delhi and the Sarai Kale Khan area, extending connectivity towards South Delhi and AIIMS. The project was built at a cost of Rs 1,635 crore.
The corridor completes the wider Barapullah elevated road network and is expected to improve movement between East and South Delhi. Reports indicate that the journey between Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and AIIMS, which can take around 45 minutes under existing traffic conditions, could reduce to about 15 minutes through the new route.
The project was approved in 2014 and construction began in 2015. It faced several delays before reaching completion. The corridor is also expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling from Noida and East Delhi towards South Delhi, helping redistribute traffic from congested sections of the Ring Road.
Mukarba Chowk Underpass Inaugurated
Alongside Barapullah Phase 3, the Mukarba Chowk underpass on the Outer Ring Road was opened. The project includes underpasses designed to improve traffic movement around one of North Delhi’s busy junctions.
Mukarba Chowk handles traffic connecting the Outer Ring Road and NH-44, including significant heavy-vehicle movement. The new infrastructure is intended to reduce conflict between through traffic and local movements at the junction.
Two More Flyover Projects Announced
Foundation stones were also laid for the Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover package and the Loni Underpass. The Modi Mill project includes extending the existing flyover towards Kalkaji and constructing a new flyover at the Savitri Cinema junction.
The Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema projects are estimated to cost around Rs 371 crore. The planned infrastructure is aimed at improving traffic movement through areas including Kalkaji, Nehru Place, Greater Kailash and CR Park.
The Loni Underpass is planned to improve connectivity between Loni and Shahdara by addressing movement at a major traffic junction.
Focus On Urban Connectivity
The latest projects form part of ongoing efforts to improve road connectivity and traffic management in Delhi. The Barapullah corridor, in particular, creates a direct elevated link between eastern and southern parts of the city while providing an additional route for traffic approaching from the Noida side.
The projects also add to Delhi’s network of elevated roads, flyovers and underpasses aimed at separating through traffic from signalised junctions. Their impact will depend on traffic integration with existing roads and how effectively vehicles are distributed across the expanded network.
