The city police have mandated tenant verification throughout Nagpur, cautioning landlords and property agents of potential criminal repercussions for failing to comply. Exercising authority under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Nagpur CP Ravinder Singal has issued a directive requiring all landlords, flat owners, and property agents to provide complete tenant information to the nearest police station either prior to renting out properties or within 48 hours of occupancy.
This order, effective from May 8 and valid until July 7, necessitates the submission of tenants’ names, permanent addresses, previous residential information, mobile numbers, identity documents, photographs, rent agreements, and tenancy duration.
Police officials indicated that this decision was made in response to concerns regarding numerous tenants residing in the city without adequate documentation or police records, complicating identification and tracking during investigations. The order also highlights the potential for unlawful activities and threats to law and order stemming from the lack of verified tenant information.
Particular attention has been directed towards foreign nationals. Landlords housing foreign tenants are now required to submit passport, visa, and FRRO registration details to the police. Additionally, the notification specifies that no property owner or agent is permitted to rent out premises without notifying the police and conducting tenant verification.
To enforce this order, police will carry out inspection and verification operations, especially focusing on illegal immigrants and undocumented residents. Any breach of this directive may result in criminal proceedings under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to police.
Citizens are also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or call 112. This order is applicable throughout the Nagpur City Police Commissionerate limits.
