What Is Micro-Surfacing?
Micro-surfacing is a modified form of slurry surfacing designed for relatively rapid setting and improved performance under traffic. The treatment uses a carefully proportioned mixture of aggregate, polymer-modified asphalt emulsion, mineral filler, water and chemical additives.
The aggregate provides the required surface texture and structural stability within the treatment layer, while the asphalt emulsion binds the aggregate particles. Polymer modification improves the flexibility, adhesion and durability of the finished surface. Cement or other mineral fillers may be used to adjust setting characteristics and improve the properties of the mixture.
Unlike conventional asphalt overlays, micro-surfacing is generally applied as a thin treatment over the existing pavement. Its effectiveness therefore depends significantly on the condition of the underlying pavement.
