What Is Surface Dressing in Road Construction?
Surface dressing, also known as chip sealing, is a preventive road maintenance technique in which a bituminous binder is sprayed uniformly over an existing pavement or prepared road base. A layer of clean, appropriately graded aggregates is then spread over the binder and compacted using rollers.
The binder holds the aggregate particles in place and forms a water-resistant surface layer. The exposed aggregate particles provide surface texture and improve tyre grip.
The method can be carried out in different configurations depending on pavement conditions and project requirements.
