Tata Steel has set a benchmark of sustainability by utilizing its slag-based aggregates in construction of rural roads. Over 1.5 lac tonnes of slag-based aggregates have been utilized in construction of 21 roads, developed by Jharkhand State Rural Road Development Authority (JSRRDA) in the East Singhbhum district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced Mission LiFE (Life Style for Environment) to the world at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the parties (COP26) in Glasgow. In line with this guidance, as a joint initiative by Tata Steel and JSRRDA, a two-day workshop was organized. More than 40 delegates from various parts of the country, including officials from Ministry of Rural Development, GoI joined to deliberate green technologies in rural road construction. The rural roads developed under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) using Tata Aggreto, the branded steel slag product of Tata Steel, were showcased to the visiting delegates.
In the endeavor to transform Steel Slag into sustainable aggregates, Tata Steel has set-up a state-of-the art accelerated weathering facility for processing of LD slag through steam ageing. A dedicated lab has been set-up to ensure Quality Assurance the product. Tata Steel had launched India’s first branded LD slag products – Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman. These initiatives of Tata Steel were well appreciated by the visiting delegates. The use of slag based manufactured aggregates helps in the preservation of biodiversity by reducing the need for mining of natural aggregates and eliminates the requirement of transportation of aggregates across large distances.
