The Delhi government is planning to develop two new elevated flyovers in the city’s northeast and west districts as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility. The proposed projects are expected to provide faster travel routes, ease bottlenecks on key corridors, and improve connectivity between residential and commercial areas.
According to the proposal, one of the flyovers will connect Britannia Chowk to the Outer Ring Road via Shakur Basti Railway Station. The corridor has been identified as a priority due to persistent traffic congestion and repeated complaints from residents. Recommendations from the Delhi Traffic Police also highlighted the need for an additional elevated route to manage increasing traffic volumes.
Britannia Chowk serves as an important junction linking West Delhi, North-West Delhi, North Delhi, and Central Delhi. The area experiences heavy traffic throughout the day because of its dense residential neighbourhoods, commercial establishments, markets, restaurants, and nearby metro stations. The proposed flyover is expected to reduce pressure on the existing Britannia Chowk flyover while providing smoother connectivity between these key areas.
The second proposed elevated flyover will run over the Karawal Nagar drain, connecting Ankur Enclave with Gokulpuri Metro Station. The project aims to address long-standing traffic challenges faced by residents of Karawal Nagar, Dayalpur, Sonia Vihar, and adjoining localities. Narrow roads, encroachments, and increasing vehicle numbers have resulted in frequent traffic jams, particularly during peak commuting hours.
Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to offer a faster alternative route, reduce travel time, and improve access to the metro network for commuters in northeast Delhi.
In addition to these two flyovers, the Public Works Department (PWD) is also planning a 1.8-km cable-stayed bridge between Azadpur and Delhi University North Campus. The bridge forms part of the government’s broader Ring Road decongestion plan, which seeks to improve traffic flow on some of Delhi’s busiest transport corridors.
