GMDA Restarts Planning for SPR Elevated Corridor

by Constro Facilitator

The long-awaited Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) elevated corridor project in Gurugram has returned to the planning phase, with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) initiating the process for a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) on a crucial six-kilometre stretch between Ghata Chowk and Vatika Chowk. The move marks another attempt to revive a project that has faced repeated redesigns and delays over the past several years.

The proposed corridor forms part of a larger 12-kilometre elevated road envisioned to provide a signal-free traffic connection from Ghata Chowk to National Highway-8 (NH-8), one of the busiest transport corridors in the National Capital Region (NCR). Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve mobility, reduce travel times, and ease congestion along the rapidly developing Southern Peripheral Road.

GMDA has invited bids from consulting firms to prepare the DPR and associated tender documents. The selected consultant will be responsible for carrying out traffic surveys, geotechnical investigations, utility mapping, structural assessments, and alignment studies. These technical evaluations will help determine the most efficient design and implementation strategy for the elevated corridor.

According to GMDA officials, the consultant is expected to complete the DPR within three months of appointment. Following the submission of the report and receipt of necessary approvals, the authority plans to float construction tenders for the project.

Officials have indicated that the elevated corridor is being planned on the lines of the Dwarka Expressway, which has emerged as a major infrastructure project in the region. In addition to the elevated road structure, the project will also focus on improving supporting infrastructure such as service roads, drainage systems, pedestrian pathways, and overall corridor management. These enhancements are expected to improve both vehicular movement and commuter safety.

The SPR corridor has been under discussion since 2019 but has faced several obstacles. Changing traffic projections, integration requirements with proposed metro connectivity, and the addition of new infrastructure elements have resulted in multiple redesigns. These revisions have increased project costs and delayed execution timelines.

Even the separate Vatika Chowk-to-NH-8 section of the corridor has experienced setbacks. Earlier this year, a construction tender worth approximately ₹755 crore was floated for that stretch, but the bidding process was later withdrawn, further delaying progress.

Despite these challenges, the renewed DPR exercise reflects the government’s commitment to upgrading one of Gurugram’s most important urban transport corridors. As residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments continue to expand along SPR, improved road infrastructure remains critical to supporting future growth. If implemented successfully, the elevated corridor could become a major catalyst for connectivity, real estate development, and economic activity across southern Gurugram.
