State highways begins widening of Vellore-Tirupattur Road

The State Highways Department has initiated the expansion of the Vellore-Tirupattur main road (SH-122) to a four-lane configuration at Abdullapuram, located near the airport currently under construction in Vellore.

This expansion will offer an alternative route for travelers, enabling them to avoid the congested Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 48), which will particularly benefit small towns and agricultural villages along the route.

Funded through the Chief Minister’s Road Development Plan (CMRDP) for the fiscal year 2024-25, the project aims to enhance traffic flow for heavy vehicles, including trucks and lorries. With a budget of Rs 50 crore, the work will cover a distance of 79.5 km, with eight km being widened from seven meters to 10 meters.

The project encompasses the construction of 21 minor bridges, bus bays, stormwater drainage systems, safety installations such as CCTV cameras, and additional features. Completion is anticipated by 2026. However, it is important to note that 622 trees will be removed for the project, and several electrical poles and transformers will need to be relocated.
