PMC earns Rs 40 crore property tax in a week

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has offered a 40% discount on property tax for self-occupied properties after the state government cleared the scheme.

A week since the issuance of property tax bills, the civic administration has earned Rs 40 crore from the levy.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has offered a 40% discount on property tax for self-occupied properties after the state government cleared the scheme. “Citizens can pay the tax online or offline. Owners can access the bills online too. Distribution of the physical bills has started,” said Ajit Deshmukh, the head of PMC’s property tax department.

As per the state’s notification, properties that were registered after 2019 and had not got the benefit of the discount will be assessed. They will get the discount with effect from April 1, 2023.

The 40% tax scheme was discontinued in 2019, and the PMC started the distribution of bills with increased tax. Even the arrears of previous years were to be taken from the property owners. This led to protests.

On May 22, 2022, Rs7.4 crore was collected as property tax. A year later, on May 22, 2023, the earning was Rs 6.9 crore.
