Puducherry Launches Rs 110 Crore ISWM Project

In an attempt to process construction waste and end its dumping in different parts of the city by builders and residents, Madurai corporation plans to construct a construction and demolition waste processing plant at Vellaikal dumping yard at an estimated cost of 6 crore.

The plant will have a capacity to process 100 tonnes a day.

Apart from the plant, four debris collection centres will be constructed at Vellaikal, Kochadai, Palathotam and Gatelock road. Corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon said the plant will be constructed in public private partnership (PPP) mode on design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) basis. In this model, the entire responsibility of the project for the period of concession lies with the private party after which it will be transferred to the corporation.

Construction waste dumped on roadsides plays a major role in making Madurai roads dusty and it is a common sight along the Vaigai riverbank road. Madurai corporation had recently launched a drive to remove encroachments along the riverbank and construction waste was also removed along the stretch.

The plant will help tackle disposal of construction waste and also generate revenue for the corporation. The corporation has floated the tender for constructing the plant which will start after the contractor submits a detailed project report.
