Modern steel-making facility inaugurated at SAIL's Rourkela plant

Union Steel Minister H D Kumaraswamy officially opened a state-of-the-art steel-making facility at SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on 18 November 2025, representing a significant advancement in the socio-economic development of the region.

Minister Kumaraswamy inaugurated the ‘Caster-4 unit’ within the Steel Melting Shop-2, thereby enhancing the operational capabilities of the plant. This expansion is a component of SAIL’s comprehensive strategy to elevate RSP’s production capacity to nine million tonnes per annum (MTPA), effectively more than doubling its existing output.

With an anticipated investment of Rs 30,000 crore, the initiative is designed to bolster supplies to critical industries such as defence, oil and gas, and automotive sectors. In the company of Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Kumaraswamy reaffirmed the Government of India’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of RSP.
