The highly anticipated Bowbazar segment of the Kolkata Metro, which connects Howrah and Sealdah stations, is poised to commence commercial operations following a virtual inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 18 July.
The Prime Minister is expected to visit Durgapur in West Burdwan for a BJP rally and will unveil the metro link service virtually, as confirmed by officials. Covering a distance of 2.5 km, the underground Bowbazar stretch has represented one of the most intricate phases of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor development.
Managed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, the project faced numerous obstacles, including protests, spatial limitations, and recurrent cave-ins in the densely populated region. These challenges required the rehabilitation of affected residents and resulted in construction delays.
Once operational, this crucial metro link is anticipated to greatly enhance east-west urban mobility throughout Kolkata, providing commuters with a seamless and time-efficient transit option between two of the city’s busiest railway hubs.
