The municipal administration and water supply department has sanctioned 81.7 crore for a section of the new link road project connecting the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur with core city areas.
Trichy corporation officials said that the link road will be 9.8km long starting from the right bank of the Koraiyar river near IBT and ending on the right bank of the Kudamurutti river near police checkpost on Trichy-Karur national highway. The entire road has been divided into sections I, II, and III.
The local body recently received 81.7 crore to construct the section I between Panjapur and Karumandapam. The funds include loan and grant made under the Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure Finance – Tamil Nadu (SMIF-TN).The section I will have elevated roads for 1.3km and a rail overbridge for 640m near Gandhi Nagar. Retaining walls abutting the river bund will be developed for 2.2km long. The section I will have a footpath for 1.2km and closed stormwater drain for a kilometre.
“The link road will have two lanes. So far, funds for sections I and II were obtained from various schemes. The section III, the longest stretch between Karumandapam and Woraiyur, would get funds soon,” a senior official said.
The entire project is estimated to cost around 367 crore. Since the section III is likely to involve land acquisition, additional funds may be required to offer compensation. While Trichy corporation initially proposed landscaping and beautification as a part of the project, the state govt has dropped those components to cut down the total cost.
Officials said elevated stretches with approach roads would come up at intersections on Trichy-Dindigul NH, Vayalur Road, and the Kuzhumayee Amman temple behind the district collector office. Work for the project might be launched by chief minister M K Stalin during his visit to Trichy in a month or two.
