The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has intensified its initiatives to recover long-overdue property taxes, having identified 149 properties for auction in an effort to collect dues amounting to 3.29 crore, while it has already managed to recover 95.3 crore through property tax warrants.
The property tax arrears in Nagpur have now escalated to over 938.7 crore. Recently, the Times of India reported that 261 prime properties have defaulted on payments exceeding 25 lakh each, resulting in total arrears of 442.34 crore. As of September 2025, the property tax and assessment department has issued 10,042 warrants under Taxation Rule 42, addressing outstanding dues of 95.31 crore.
Out of these, 9,659 warrants valued at 91.96 crore have been successfully served, while 383 warrants totaling 3.36 crore are still pending execution.
The department has recovered 32.44 crore from 4,581 property owners following the issuance of warrants. Despite these efforts, dues amounting to 59.51 crore from 5,078 cases are at various stages of recovery. Furthermore, 231 properties have been attached to recover 2.47 crore, and the focus has now shifted to auctioning these attached properties under Taxation Rule 47(3).
Among the 149 properties identified, the Mangalwari zone leads with 67 properties valued at 1.39 crore pending recovery for auction, followed by Lakadganj with 29 properties (54.45 lakh), Satranjipura with 26 properties (13.63 lakh), Dhantoli with 20 properties (42.49 lakh), and Nehru Nagar with 7 properties (79.33 lakh). Other zones, such as Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Gandhibagh, and Ashi Nagar, currently do not have any auctionable properties as recoveries in those areas are largely completed or under appeal.
Officials have stated that public auctions have already begun in the Lakadganj zone, where 5 properties were recently auctioned, and in the coming days, the drive against tax defaulters is expected to intensify, with a focus on large commercial and institutional defaulters. “The auction process will be closely monitored to ensure transparency and maximize recovery before the end of the financial year,” an official remarked.
Officials observed that the recovery of even a fraction of these dues could greatly enhance funding for vital projects, such as the highly anticipated Nag River Pollution Abatement Project. Through stringent enforcement actions, recovery via tax warrants, and an impending auction initiative, NMC seeks to bolster its tax compliance and close the growing disparity between arrears and revenue, thereby ensuring that funds are accessible for infrastructure and essential civic services throughout the city.
