The Union government has approved two major national highway development projects in Kerala and Rajasthan with a combined investment of over ₹3,022 crore, aimed at enhancing connectivity, improving road safety, and boosting regional economic growth. The projects are expected to strengthen freight movement, reduce travel times, and support key industries and tourism destinations in both states.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the approval of ₹1,663.15 crore for the widening of a 54.37-kilometre stretch of National Highway-183 in Kerala. The project covers the section between Kollam Bypass Junction and Anjilimoodu and will upgrade the existing road into a four-lane highway.
The NH-183 corridor plays a critical role in connecting important industrial and commercial centres in the state. Kollam, widely known as India’s cashew processing hub, is home to numerous manufacturing units and supports thousands of workers. Improved highway infrastructure is expected to facilitate smoother transportation for industries involved in cashew processing, coir production, ceramics manufacturing, fisheries, and rare earth mineral processing.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to Kollam Port, enabling faster cargo movement and lowering logistics costs. Better road infrastructure will help reduce travel times for commercial vehicles and strengthen supply chain efficiency across the region.
Tourism is another sector expected to benefit significantly from the highway upgrade. Enhanced connectivity to destinations such as Thekkady and Periyar Tiger Reserve is likely to improve visitor access and support tourism-related economic activity.
Alongside the Kerala project, the Centre has also approved a major highway development initiative in Rajasthan as part of its broader strategy to modernize the national road network. The investment will support the expansion and improvement of key transportation corridors, facilitating smoother movement of goods and passengers while promoting economic development in the region.
The approved projects align with the government’s ongoing focus on strengthening infrastructure as a catalyst for growth. Modern highways not only improve connectivity between cities and industrial centres but also contribute to reduced vehicle operating costs, enhanced road safety, and greater efficiency in freight transportation.
