Close to the end of the current financial year on March 31, Chandigarh administration and Panjab University have property tax arrears amounting to Rs 67 crore.
While the amount may decrease after reconciliation, as per the record of the civic body authority, the UT engineering department has to pay around Rs 45 crore while PU has to deposit Rs 22 crore for property tax or service charges. Notices have already been given to both the authorities in this regard.
The UT engineering department is reconciling data and has also paid around Rs 1.5 crore to the MC in just the past few months but since the amount due is large, deliberations are on.
Officials of the engineering department have been studying the record and data provided to them by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. “A few months back, senior officers of the UT and MC held a meeting to discuss the tax issue” a senior official said.
