Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has inaugurated the state’s first cable-stayed bridge built in an urban area, marking a significant addition to the road infrastructure connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The newly completed flyover at Bhat Crossroads on the Gandhinagar–Ahmedabad Airport Road has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore.
The 1.48-km-long cable-stayed flyover has been developed through a joint initiative of the Gujarat government’s Roads and Buildings Department and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), with both agencies sharing the project cost equally. The bridge is expected to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion on one of the state’s busiest urban corridors.
Along with inaugurating the flyover, the Chief Minister also performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion of the bridge over the Narmada Main Canal between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle. The ₹48-crore project will widen the existing six-lane bridge by constructing new three-lane bridges on both sides, transforming it into a 12-lane facility.
The expansion has been planned to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and ensure smoother movement between Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and the airport. According to the state government, the Gandhinagar–Koba–Airport Road and the Sardar Patel (SP) Ring Road together handle an estimated 1.93 lakh vehicles every day, making them among the busiest transport corridors in Gujarat.
Bhat Circle serves as a major intersection on the Gandhinagar–Airport Road and has experienced frequent traffic congestion due to the heavy flow of vehicles. The newly operational cable-stayed bridge has been designed to separate through traffic from local traffic, allowing vehicles travelling on the SP Ring Road to pass beneath the flyover without interruption.
To further improve traffic management, authorities have also developed three-lane service roads on both sides of the flyover, creating a total of six service lanes. These roads will facilitate smoother movement for vehicles travelling towards the SP Ring Road as well as major destinations such as Vadodara and Surat.
The project forms part of Gujarat’s ongoing efforts to strengthen urban transport infrastructure, improve connectivity between key economic centres, and reduce travel time on high-density road corridors. With the inauguration of the state’s first urban cable-stayed bridge, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar region gains an important infrastructure asset designed to support rising traffic demand and future urban growth.
