Toll hiked on Bengaluru–Nelamangala section of NH4

From July 1, commuters using the Bengaluru–Nelamangala segment of National Highway-4 (NH-4) will incur updated toll charges, as stated in a public announcement from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The stretch of Tumakuru road serves as a vital corridor for traffic entering and leaving Bengaluru, especially from the northern and northwestern regions.

The new toll structure is applicable to the 19.5 km access-controlled segment between the 10 km and 29.500 km markers. The adjusted toll fees will be enforced at six distinct plazas along this route. These plazas are situated at 14.875 km (heading towards Nelamangala), 26.075 km (heading towards Bengaluru), and additional locations at 16.600 km, 17.100 km, 23.150 km, and 23.800 km, accommodating vehicles coming from peripheral and service roads.

According to the announcement, cars and jeeps will incur a charge of ₹30 for a single trip, ₹45 for a round trip, and ₹865 for a monthly pass. Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and mini buses will be charged ₹50 for a single journey, ₹75 for a round trip, and ₹1,440 for a monthly pass. For buses and trucks, the toll has been set at ₹100 for a one-way trip, ₹150 for a return trip, and ₹2,955 for a monthly pass. In contrast, earthmoving equipment and heavy construction machinery will face the highest charges — ₹160 for a single journey, ₹240 for a round trip, and ₹4,760 for a monthly pass.

NHAI has announced several concessions. Officials indicated that a 25% discount will be available for return trips completed within 24 hours, while a 33% discount will apply if 50 single journeys are undertaken within a month. Furthermore, commercial vehicles registered in the district (excluding those under the National Permit) will benefit from a 50% discount.

The toll policy continues to enforce strict penalties on overloaded vehicles, which will be charged 10 times the regular toll rate along with being required to offload excess cargo.

Starting from July 1, toll rates on several significant routes within the city, such as the NICE Road and the Bengaluru Elevated Tollway from Central Silk Board to Electronics City, extending further towards Attibele near the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, have been updated. This increase is determined by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) as of March 31, 2025, which permits annual modifications to maintain the financial viability and proper maintenance of road infrastructure, as stated by officials.

The recent adjustment in toll rates aligns with the annual modification permitted under the National Highways Fee Rules, which are influenced by the WPI. This revision is essential for ensuring ongoing maintenance and the financial sustainability of road infrastructure, remarked a senior official from NHAI.

The adjustment based on the WPI is calculated as of March 31; however, the actual implementation may differ based on the duration required for approvals and notifications. In certain areas, it is enacted on April 1, while in others, such as this year’s Bengaluru-Nelamangala and Electronics City, it has been implemented from July 1, the official clarified.
