The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train initiative has successfully completed the launch of a viaduct span over the Kalupur flyover in Ahmedabad, which serves as a significant railway overbridge on the Western Railway’s Sabarmati-Mumbai main line.

Representatives from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited indicated that the viaduct, which runs parallel to the current railway track, was constructed using the span-by-span technique, featuring a 45m bridge span positioned over the flyover.

This structure elevates approximately 19.5m from the ground to the rail level and was constructed from 19 segments, with the total span weighing around 1,200 metric tonnes. The Kalupur flyover is one of the busiest two-lane routes in Ahmedabad, linking Shahibaug, Asarwa, and Kalupur, and accommodating thousands of commuters each day.

The completion of this span is anticipated to mitigate prolonged traffic diversions on this route by restricting disruptions to brief, pre-scheduled night closures instead of extended daytime limitations, as stated by officials. The erection of the span was carried out during a controlled night block from midnight to 6am, with all entry and exit points within the work zone completely closed during these hours, allowing normal traffic to resume during the day.

Permissions were obtained for the period of May 22-25, and the processes of auto-launching, segment transport, erection, dry matching, and gluing were accomplished within three nights, according to the officials. In the Ahmedabad district, the corridor traverses 31 locations, of which 23 have been completed.
