The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC), commonly referred to as MahaRail, which is responsible for executing the project, has already failed to meet two deadlines. The project commenced in February 2024 with an initial completion goal set for December 2025, which was subsequently postponed to March 2026.
Despite this revised deadline, substantial portions of the project remain unfinished, leading to public dissatisfaction due to ongoing traffic disruptions. A site visit indicated that extensive sections of both flyovers have been constructed up to Jagnade Square from all four directions.
However, the primary obstacle lies at the central merger point, where the elevated interchange structure is still incomplete, resulting in significant stretches being disconnected. MRIDC has installed several pillars at the junction where the two flyovers are intended to converge. Consequently, commuters navigating the heavily congested East Nagpur corridor continue to encounter bottlenecks, diversions, and increasing traffic pressure.
Local residents and traders have expressed that the extended construction period has exacerbated congestion and adversely impacted businesses in the surrounding areas. This project, among several flyover initiatives undertaken by MRIDC in East Nagpur, entails the construction of two three-lane flyovers that will intersect above the busy junction.
One corridor is being developed from Reshimbag Chowk to KDK College Square, while the other will link Telephone Exchange Chowk to Bhande Plot Chowk. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹251 crore. The flyover project holds technical significance, with two elevated corridors set to intersect above Jagnade Square—effectively forming a junction over the existing road intersection.
The total length of the project is approximately 2,310 metres. Citizens have also highlighted ongoing delays in various MRIDC infrastructure projects throughout Nagpur, claiming that works frequently exceed announced timelines without providing clarity on revised completion dates.
The continuous extensions have prompted inquiries regarding project oversight and coordination, especially considering the significant traffic effects in heavily populated regions. Upon being approached for an update on the status and adjusted timeline of the Jagnade Square flyover, senior officials from MRIDC did not offer specific details concerning the project’s completion timeline.
