LIT seeks land for new schemes

The transfer of colonies from the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) to the Municipal Corporation (MC) was intended to alleviate the MC’s responsibilities. However, the LIT now finds itself struggling to maintain its relevance. With the trust transferring its remaining residential areas to the municipal corporation and the MC beginning the process of integrating these colonies, the trust is facing a critical challenge to its existence.

Currently, aside from the Atal Apartment project, the LIT lacks significant development initiatives or schemes on its agenda. To address this, the trust intends to initiate a new residential and commercial development scheme, prompting its officials to seek suitable land. The LIT administration has commenced efforts to secure land through a pooling arrangement for the development of this new scheme.

A public notice has been issued by the trust administration, inviting interested landholders to contribute land for the scheme, provided it is located within or adjacent to the MC limits. Under the land pooling initiative, a commercial and residential scheme will be established following the acquisition of land, with landholders receiving approximately 1,100 square yards for each acre contributed. During the tenure of former LIT chairman Raman Balasubramanium, a proposal for a new residential scheme was submitted to the government, focusing on areas near Hambran Road. However, the scheme was halted following a change in leadership. Since assuming office, LIT chairman Tarsem Bhinder has resumed the search for land in the vicinity of Sidhwan Canal and Lohara.

The trust administration has now called upon landholders to submit their applications in sealed envelopes to the LIT chairman’s office within 21 days if they wish to participate in the development of the new commercial and residential scheme in the city. The process will advance upon verification of the submitted documents.

LIT chairman Tarsem Bhinder said, “Property holders have been invited to pool land for development of a new scheme. The procedure will be completed after verification of documents and the proposal will be sent to the government. After getting government approval, a new scheme will be launched.” He added that they wanted to develop a scheme for residents because no such scheme had been launched by the trust for a long time.
