Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) has secured a ₹524.17 crore contract from NHPC Limited for works at the Salal Power Station in Jammu & Kashmir. The project involves civil and hydro-mechanical works, along with associated ancillary and enabling works, to make the undersluices of the concrete dam fully functional and operational. The contract has a duration of 27 months.
The Salal Power Station is one of NHPC’s key hydroelectric assets. The rehabilitation of its undersluices is expected to enhance the dam’s operational efficiency, improve sediment management, and strengthen its long-term safety and reliability.
The contract builds on HCC’s four-decade legacy of delivering major engineering projects across Jammu & Kashmir. The company constructed the 690 MW Salal Hydroelectric Project, which was commissioned in 1987. HCC has also constructed four other hydropower projects in the region—Uri-II (240 MW), Kishanganga (333 MW), Nimoo Bazgo (45 MW), and Chutak (44 MW)—with a combined installed capacity of 1,352 MW, representing approximately 38% of J&K’s total installed hydropower capacity.
Beyond hydroelectric infrastructure, HCC has also contributed to the region’s railway connectivity. The company constructed India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad and executed nearly 32 km of tunnels, accounting for about 27% of the total tunnel length of the strategically important Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. These works support connectivity for both civilian and defence movement.
