The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has prolonged the 5% discount on property tax payments for the entire month of May, following a shortfall in collections that did not meet expectations due to a delayed commencement of the initiative.
The collection process, which was initially set to start on April 1, only began on April 7. Previously, the corporation had declared the rebate for taxpayers who settled their dues for the fiscal year 2026-27 by April 30. However, as collections continued to fall below projections, the rebate period has now been extended until the end of May.
HDMC has established a property tax collection goal of Rs 235 crore for 2026-27 and has thus far gathered Rs 90 crore. Officials indicated that the extension aims to enhance overall collections. An HDMC official mentioned that the corporation had set a property tax collection target of Rs 138 crore for 2023-24, achieving Rs 100.81 crore. In 2024-25, against a target of Rs 150 crore, it collected Rs 138 crore by the end of March.
For 2025-26, HDMC surpassed its target of Rs 188 crore by collecting Rs 201 crore. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali stated that according to the government order, a 5% tax concession was available until the end of April and has now been extended through the end of May. He noted that a resolution to this effect was passed during the general meeting and urged residents to take advantage of the concession. “To date, Rs 90 crore has been collected.
This year, the target is Rs 235 crore. With the 5% rebate continuing in May, we anticipate improved collections,” he remarked. Ghali also mentioned that GIS work will be offered free of charge in July and August. He expressed optimism that property tax collections will further increase next year, as properties that were previously excluded will be included in the tax net.
