India is taking a major step toward strengthening its position in global aviation by developing key airports as international transit centres. The initiative aims to transform airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Rajkot into competitive transit hubs capable of attracting international connecting passengers who currently travel through major Middle Eastern airports such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha.
The move is part of a broader strategy to increase India’s share of global transit traffic while enhancing the country’s aviation infrastructure and passenger experience. For decades, a significant number of Indian travellers flying to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and other international destinations have relied on foreign hubs for connecting flights. By improving domestic infrastructure and streamlining passenger processes, India hopes to retain a larger portion of this traffic within its own airport network.
A key component of the strategy involves simplifying immigration, customs and baggage-handling procedures. Air India is set to introduce the first phase of the initiative, enabling passengers travelling from Varanasi to complete immigration formalities before boarding domestic flights that connect with international services. This model is designed to create a seamless travel experience similar to that offered by leading global transit hubs.
Under the new arrangement, passengers will be able to transfer through major Indian airports without undergoing repeated immigration and customs checks. Checked baggage will be automatically transferred to onward international flights, reducing transit times and improving convenience. Initially, the service will provide access to 17 international destinations, including major cities such as London, Frankfurt, Milan and Singapore.
Following the pilot implementation on the Varanasi–Delhi route, authorities plan to expand the system to additional domestic cities and integrate it across Mumbai and Bengaluru airports. The initiative is expected to strengthen connectivity between smaller Indian cities and global destinations while making Indian airports more attractive for international transit operations.
Infrastructure upgrades are also being planned to support the transformation. Delhi Airport is preparing to introduce airside bus transfer services between terminals, allowing passengers to move more efficiently without exiting secure areas. In addition, work is expected to begin on India’s first airport air-train system, which will connect terminals, cargo facilities and other airport infrastructure. Such developments are aimed at reducing transfer times and enhancing operational efficiency.
The inclusion of Rajkot among the designated transit centres reflects India’s ambition to develop a wider network of aviation hubs beyond its traditional metropolitan gateways. As passenger traffic continues to grow and airlines expand their international networks, the government sees transit hub development as a critical element of the country’s aviation growth strategy.
