Hebbal flyover to turn into a multi-modal hub

Decongestion endeavours are set to turn Hebbal flyover, the city’s notorious bottleneck, into a mutli-modal transit hub. The multi-modal integration (MMI) is likely to see the establishment of one suburban rail and three Metro stations at the flyover.

Decongestion endeavours are set to turn Hebbal flyover, the city’s notorious bottleneck, into a mutli-modal transit hub. The multi-modal integration (MMI) is likely to see the establishment of one suburban rail and three Metro stations at the flyover.

Work is progressing on one Metro and the suburban railway stations, while one station is awaiting central approval. The fourth is still on the drawing board.

Under Metro’s Blue line (ORR-Hebbal-Kempegowda International Airport), Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is building a station near the BMTC depot located close to the junction. BMRCL is awaiting Centre’s approval for the Kempapura-JP Nagar 4th Phase line which includes a station at the flyover. The Sarjapura-Hebbal Metro corridor, still in planning stage, also envisages taking off at the flyover.

Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited — K-RIDE — has decided to build a station at Hebbal as part of Mallige corridor (Byappanahalli to Chikkabanavara) on the eastern side of the flyover as part of Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP).

RK Singh (project and planning), K-RIDE said: “As per the state government’s decision, a multi-modal transport hub has been proposed at Hebbal flyover junction. Various modes of transport such as Metro, suburban rail and city buses will be integrated at the junction. Foot over-bridges will connect all the stations. Various agencies such as DULT, BMRCL, K-RIDE and other stakeholders have deliberated on the location of the three proposed stations.”

Work is progressing on the Byappanahalli-Chikkabanavara suburban line and it is expected to be operational by October 2025. The South Western Railway’s Hebbal station is operational at the junction.

BMRCL MD Anjum Parwez said: “Integration of various modes of transport will help decongest the junction. We have asked BDA to design their road works project at the junction in such a manner that it doesn’t come in the way of Metro alignment. Our phase III Metro alignment will go above the existing flyover towards Yeshwantpur side. The Sarjapur-Hebbal line terminates at the junction.”

The BMRCL has slightly changed the alignment of its Blue Line near Hebbal to save a burial ground land from acquisition.
