The formation of the Trichy Urban Development Authority is to be delayed further since the government is yet to nominate members to it.
Like the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the proposed authority will facilitate approvals for building plans and layouts in the notified urban areas.
While the areas were notified in November last year, a chairman, a member secretary, and members were not appointed yet.
While the city is witnessing a spurt in investments such as a tidel park and private IT parks, city developmental forums said the urban development authority is much needed now for better utilisation of land parcels.
“While Trichy has a huge chunk of land owned by central government institutions, the urban development authority’s role is vital to coordinate and ensure balanced growth when the investments flow in,” said M Muthuganesan, a member of Trichy Intra-City Development Endeavours.
Apart from the planned development, the authority would also act on deviations made by builders during construction through an enforcement wing.
As the present local planning authority has no such enforcement wing, activists said actions against building plan deviations were not satisfactory.
The urban development authority would also prepare a master plan for the planned growth of the city. “A government order is awaited to increase the staff strength and appoint members for the authority. There will not be any change in the areas already notified under the authority,” said an official with the housing and urban development.
