Union steel minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government will soon announce parameters for Brand India logo to be used on steel made in the country. While individual companies make steel, he said it is important to develop “Brand India” steel.
Initially two companies, including SAIL, will use this logo and then others will follow.
“Steel production is up 50% to 150 million tonnes (MT) annually, which is the highest ever for India. We are now the world’s second-biggest steel maker (after China, which makes about 1000MT annually). Our production will increase to 300MT by 2030,” Scindia said.
The government is working on making green steel by adopting environment-friendly processes. At the moment, there are no parameters for defining green steel and India is working on them too.
“Decarbonisation of steel is very important. Globally, steel sector is going for carbon neutrality,” he said.
The steel ministry is working with rail and highways ministry under Gati Shakti project to ensure seamless movement of raw material and finished products within the country. Twenty-two “critical gaps” in plants have been found in this regard and “we are resolving them all.”
