Chandigarh civic body starts getting property tax online

The tax collection is about Rs 40 lakh, so far, and when e-Sampark centres also open in a day or two, the civic body hopes to get even more money.

After mailing property tax bills last week, the municipal corporation has started receiving the payment online.

The tax collection is about Rs 40 lakh, so far, and when e-Sampark centres also open in a day or two, the civic body hopes to get even more money. The civic body struggles to generate income during Covid-19 pandemic and tax revenue is a key financial component.

An MC official said: “Tax money is coming slow but people have started depositing the dues online, finally. We encourage them to use this payment method to avoid crowding the e-Sampark centres. By this week, all residents will get their tax bills, while commercial property owners will get their bill in another couple of days. More shops will open in the coming days and we want even distribution of property tax bills in commercial areas.”

The civic body has tied-up with the postal department to deliver tax bills via vans. The MC has close to 1.10-lakh property tax payers in the city. Of these, nearly 85,000 are in the residential segment, while 26,000-odd in the commercial category. The revenue target from this head is about Rs 50 crore.

Owners of both commercial and residential property in the city will be able to file their tax with rebate till July 31. Residential property owners will get 20% rebate, while commercial property owners will have 10% concession. After that, they will have to pay 25% penalty and 12% interest on the amount.
