Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced a wide-ranging policy and infrastructure push following his first Cabinet meeting, including a major ₹2,000 crore allocation for Bengaluru road upgrades along with new initiatives focused on employment generation and urban development reforms.
The government said the road infrastructure funds will be used for resurfacing and asphalting roads that are not already covered under existing development projects. Officials have been directed to complete the work within a tight timeline of three to four months, signalling an accelerated approach to improving urban connectivity and easing traffic conditions in the state capital.
The announcement forms part of a broader six-point governance programme outlined by the Chief Minister, which prioritises youth welfare, job creation, and infrastructure development across Karnataka. The decisions were taken during Shivakumar’s first Cabinet meeting after assuming office, marking the beginning of his administration’s policy roadmap.
Alongside the infrastructure push, the government has proposed the establishment of a dedicated private-sector employment exchange aimed at connecting job seekers with companies more efficiently. The initiative is intended to streamline hiring processes and expand access to job opportunities beyond the government sector.
In parallel, the administration has set an ambitious target of filling nearly 56,000 vacancies across various government departments, reinforcing its focus on public sector employment. The Chief Minister stated that recruitment schedules will be announced shortly, and departments have been instructed to prepare detailed hiring plans within a month.
The proposed employment exchange is expected to serve as a bridge between industry and job seekers, with a focus on improving employability and ensuring better coordination between workforce demand and supply. The government has indicated that local candidates, particularly Kannadigas, will be given preference, though the final framework is still under consultation.
Urban infrastructure development remains a key priority for the administration, with Bengaluru’s road network receiving immediate attention due to long-standing concerns over congestion, potholes, and maintenance delays. The ₹2,000 crore allocation is expected to fund large-scale resurfacing works across priority corridors and residential stretches, improving mobility in one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
The state government has also hinted at broader urban reforms aimed at improving civic infrastructure, governance efficiency, and service delivery in major cities. While detailed policy documents are yet to be released, officials have indicated that further announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
The new policy direction reflects a combined focus on infrastructure modernization and employment expansion, with the government positioning these measures as key drivers of economic growth and urban improvement in Karnataka.
