How Workplaces Can Drive Sustainability at Scale?

Workplaces influence daily habits, making sustainability easier through shared resources, better design, and responsible practices that extend beyond the office.

For years, workplace sustainability has largely been defined by green buildings, energy-efficient infrastructure, and environmental certifications. While these remain important milestones, they represent only part of the sustainability equation. The real opportunity lies in something far more powerful—the everyday behaviours that workplaces shape.

The average urban professional spends nearly eight to ten hours a day at work, making the workplace one of the few environments capable of influencing habits consistently and at scale. Yet most sustainability conversations continue to focus either on the building itself or on individual behaviour at home, overlooking the place where millions of daily decisions around energy, water, waste, food, and resource consumption are actually made.

Buildings create the potential for sustainability, but people determine whether that potential is realised.

Behavioural science has long established that people are influenced by the environments in which they make decisions. Small interventions—such as default double-sided printing, clearly designed waste segregation stations, sensor-based lighting, reusable pantry systems, or eliminating single-use plastics—often create more lasting behavioural change than awareness campaigns alone. When sustainable choices become the easiest choices, they naturally become habits.

This is what makes India’s growing flexible workspace sector more significant than it first appears  Shared workspaces already optimise resources by allowing multiple organisations to use common infrastructure instead of duplicating meeting rooms, cafés, utilities, and amenities within individual offices. While this model is often appreciated for its operational efficiency, its environmental value deserves equal attention. Every shared workspace reduces unnecessary resource consumption and makes better use of existing infrastructure, proving that collaboration itself can be a sustainability strategy.

Everyday action also extends beyond what happens inside the office. . In cities where professionals spend hours commuting each day, the location of workplaces becomes an environmental decision in itself. Well-connected workspaces closer to where people live can reduce travel-related emissions while improving quality of life. As organisations increasingly embrace distributed work models, sustainability must also include how people travel—not just how buildings operate.

Within this model, the role of workspace operators is equally significant. Unlike individual organisations that influence only their own employees, managed workspaces serve professionals from multiple businesses simultaneously. Decisions around procurement, waste management, community initiatives, and operational practices have the potential to influence thousands of people every day, making workspace operators quiet but powerful drivers of environmental change.

At Dextrus, we believe sustainability should be experienced through everyday actions rather than occasional campaigns. Our monthly e-waste collection initiative, developed in partnership with Greenview Recycling, encourages members to responsibly dispose of discarded electronics, while the value recovered contributes towards our annual Gifting for Good initiative. The objective is simple: make responsible action easy enough to become routine.

Perhaps the greatest potential, though, lies elsewhere. . Habits formed at work rarely remain confined to the office. Employees who regularly practise recycling, reduce waste, or make conscious consumption choices often carry those behaviours into their homes and communities, creating an impact far beyond the workplace itself.

The future of sustainable workplaces will therefore not be measured solely by the certifications displayed on their walls. It will be measured by the behaviours they inspire every day. Because when workplaces make sustainability part of everyday culture, they don’t just reduce their own environmental footprint—they help create more responsible communities at scale.
