Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway to get speed radar guns

In the backdrop of increasing fatal accidents on the 10-lane Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, police have decided to adopt different technologies, including deploying speed radar guns, and penalising overspeeding riders/drivers on the 117-km-long stretch.

On Tuesday, additional director general of police (ADGP) (traffic and road safety) Alok Kumar had travelled on the expressway and interacted with police officials from Ramanagara and Mandya, where more fatal accidents have been reported recently.

Kumar told that overspeeding and reckless driving were the main reasons for the tragic deaths. “In a bid to control motorists’ speed, we will adopt different methods. In the first place, we will install speed radar guns in both directions. These guns will be mainly installed at Ramanagara and Mandya. They will capture images of vehicles moving at over 100kmph. Such vehcicles will be stopped at the toll plazas and the driver will be penalised,” said Kumar.

“In next stages, Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPR) will be installed at different places so that more overspeeding vehicles can be spotted. We have discussed the matter with officials from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and all safety measures will be implemented at the earliest,” he said.

During his Tuesday visit, Kumar inspected 18 spots between Ramanagara and Mandya, where most fatal accidents had taken place. That day, Kumar had hinted that licences of people found driving above 100kmph would be suspended for violating the speed limit.
