Mumbai-Nashik highway is reopened

Mumbai, Thane motorists using the Mumbai-Nashik highway can heave a sigh of relief as the two lanes on the Nashik bound Saket bridge have been thrown open.

MSRDC engineers inspected the repairs and certified it safe for traffic movement, officials informed.

Traffic on the lane was shut abruptly last week after a defect was noticed on one of the spans running over the creek. All heavy vehicular traffic moving towards Nashik or JNPT from Mumbai and Ghodbunder road was diverted via Airoli while light vehicles were allowed to ply in a single lane. This led to massive snarls on the Eastern Express highway and Ghodbunder road.

An official explained that a snag was reported in a portion around one of the bearings used underneath a 4mx7m slab used as a connector between the two cantilever arms of the bridge over the creek. The bearings are used for cushioning the road surface.

The restoration team had lifted the almost 35 tonne slab to check the quantum of the damage underneath and spotted the defect. They immediately took corrective action.
