Amit Metaliks Ltd is set to establish a Rs 4,000 crore greenfield integrated steel manufacturing project at Raghunathpur in Purulia, West Bengal. The project is expected to strengthen the state’s industrial base while creating more than 5,000 employment opportunities.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on 17 August 2026. The proposed facility is planned with an annual steel production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes, with commercial operations targeted to begin by 2029.
Amit Metaliks, the flagship company of the Amit Alliance, is expanding its manufacturing operations through the integrated facility. The group has interests in steel, mining and infrastructure and has reported annual revenue of around Rs 2,000 crore.
Multiple Units Planned at Raghunathpur
The proposed steel complex will include several manufacturing units covering different stages of steel production. These are planned to include a pellet plant, direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, rolling mill, SEAF and forging facilities, along with a brick manufacturing unit.
A 145-MW captive power plant is also planned to meet the energy requirements of the facility. The captive power generation capacity is expected to support the plant’s operations and reduce dependence on external electricity supplies.
The integrated nature of the project will allow multiple stages of production to be located within the same industrial complex, from raw material processing to steel manufacturing and downstream operations.
Focus on Resource Efficiency
The company has also outlined several measures aimed at reducing resource consumption and managing industrial waste generated during manufacturing.
The proposed facility will incorporate waste heat recovery for power generation, water recycling and zero liquid discharge. Gas cleaning facilities are also planned as part of the project’s environmental management measures.
The project will further include slag reutilisation, allowing industrial by-products from steelmaking to be processed for further use rather than being treated solely as waste.
Employment and Industrial Impact
The project is expected to generate more than 5,000 jobs once operational. Besides direct employment at the manufacturing facility, the large-scale investment could create opportunities for contractors, logistics providers, suppliers and other businesses associated with steel production and industrial infrastructure.
With commercial production targeted for 2029, the Raghunathpur project is expected to add 1.2 million tonnes of annual steel capacity to the region.
The development also comes as demand for steel continues to support investments in infrastructure, construction, manufacturing and other industrial sectors. The establishment of an integrated facility combining steel production, captive power and downstream manufacturing could contribute to the industrial development of Purulia and surrounding areas.
The Rs 4,000 crore investment therefore represents a major manufacturing project for the region, with its proposed production capacity, employment generation and supporting industrial facilities expected to shape the next phase of development at Raghunathpur.
