The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is poised to provide a distinctive digital identity to each property within the city via QR codes, facilitating quicker, more transparent, and efficient civic services. This initiative is anticipated to enhance property identification, optimize municipal administration, and reinforce urban planning processes.

As part of this initiative, the civic authority plans to modify the existing door numbers for 240,000 households across three sectors in the city. With the implementation of the new system, each property will receive a unique QR-enabled digital identity, superseding or enhancing the traditional door numbering system.

The QR code associated with each property will contain a detailed digital profile of the assessment, allowing municipal officials and residents to promptly access information regarding property tax assessments, water tax, and other municipal taxes, ownership details, geo-tagged property data, municipal service records, and urban planning information.

Officials indicate that the new digital door numbering system is expected to provide numerous advantages to residents, such as expedited verification of property records, diminished necessity for repeated documentation, enhanced transparency in tax assessments, simplified grievance resolution, faster access to civic services, and improved identification for emergency and utility services. Moreover, citizens will have the capability to retrieve specific property-related information directly through QR scanning, thereby lessening the reliance on physical visits to municipal offices.

The civic body has already organized a specialized training program for staff in circles 1, 2, and 3 regarding the implementation of the QR code-based digital door numbering system proposed by the municipal administration department. Ward planning and regulation secretaries, ward amenities secretaries, ward administrative secretaries, and other relevant officials took part in the training program.

Officials received training on multiple facets, such as identifying ULB boundaries, mapping roads, collecting property data, mapping parcels, integrating ERP data, and geo-tagging properties. Additionally, guidance was offered on creating unique QR codes for each property and ensuring the integrity of digital data for future urban development planning. A VMC official stated, “The digital door number initiative is being implemented under the title of AP urban digital registry, and the initiative will begin soon throughout the city.”
