UID plates installation to start soon in Ludhiana

There are total 37 blocks in the city with more than 4 lakh properties registered in the municipal corporation (MC) records. Of this, the MC asked the contractor to start the mapping process with Block 29 — the largest block with around 75,000 properties.

The installation work of the smart unique identity (UID) numberplates is expected to start in another 10 days, as the mapping of the largest block of the city is still under way. Meanwhile, the design of the numberplates has been finalised, and the officials will start installing the numberplates in Block 29 once the mapping is completed.

There are total 37 blocks in the city with more than 4 lakh properties registered in the municipal corporation (MC) records. Of this, the MC asked the contractor to start the mapping process with Block 29 — the largest block with around 75,000 properties. Since this area is thickly populated, the process is taking time, and as of now over 50,000 properties have already been scanned.

MC superintendent Vivek Verma said, “The contractor has started his work in field, and it is expected that we could go ahead with the installation in the next few days.” He said the contractor has a year’s time to cover all the properties in the city and they will try to meet the deadline.

A mobile application is also being made for official use, where the entire process of mapping and installation of plates could be checked by the civic officials. The officials are also hopeful that many new properties could also be registered with the MC during the mapping, as the city has grown significantly over the past few years.

The much-awaited UID numberplates project is important both for the city residents and the civic body. While on one hand, the residents can use their UID numbers to check tax-related information and avail other MC services online, the officials on the other hand can easily check the pending tax status on the portal.

However, for the past two years the project has been delayed multiple times for technical reasons and departmental queries, and the residents are eagerly waiting for this now.
