Construction has begun on the Metro extension connecting Vanaz and Chandni Chowk in Pune, representing a significant achievement in enhancing urban connectivity towards the western gateway of the city.
The 1.5-km elevated section, which received approval last year, will feature two new stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—improving last-mile connectivity for travelers. The project is being carried out by Maha Metro, which has recently engaged a contractor to build the viaduct and stations.
Preliminary work, including soil analysis and surveys, has commenced in the Chandni Chowk vicinity. Construction will be executed in phases, with barricades set up in collaboration with traffic authorities to minimize disruption and ensure road accessibility.
Simultaneously, a flyover has been proposed near Kothrud Depot and will be constructed alongside the Metro viaduct to alleviate traffic congestion. Officials have undertaken several site inspections with the Pune Municipal Corporation to finalize the locations of the stations and their entry and exit points. Upon completion, the extension is anticipated to enhance transit efficiency, decrease congestion, and bolster Pune’s expanding Metro network.
