The central government has sanctioned the construction of an elevated flyover and service road extending from Baikampady to KIOCL Junction along National Highway-66, with a budget of ₹414.2 crore.

The National Highways Authority of India has commenced the tendering process. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta stated that this initiative is designed to enhance direct access to the New Mangalore Port. It encompasses the development of a 3.1 km roadway, which includes a modern 1.5 km six-lane elevated flyover.

The project is being executed under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, and a total of 5.8 km of service roads will be constructed adjacent to the highway. The New Mangalore Port Authority will supply the requisite additional land and financial support to the highway authority to ensure the successful execution of this project, according to the MP.

“The section of road on NH-66 is a vital corridor for direct access to the New Mangalore Port and the transport of export-import goods. This new initiative will segregate highway traffic from local vehicles, thereby facilitating smooth traffic flow and improving road safety.

The road development project in the Baikampady industrial area and the KIOCL zone will serve as a significant catalyst for the industrial and economic advancement of the district. In addition to enhancing overall road connectivity in the coastal region, it will address future traffic requirements and provide enduring infrastructure benefits,” Capt Chowta remarked.

The underpass construction project near Baikampady and Kuloor Junction on NH-66, with a cost of ₹11.6 crore, has already received approval and is currently in progress. “Subsequently, the central government has now granted approval for the construction of the elevated flyover and service road, which will modernize our port-area highway zone.

This development corridor will not only facilitate the efficient movement of cargo vehicles to the New Mangalore Port but will also offer advanced and sustainable infrastructure facilities for the daily commute and safety of local residents,” he further added.
