The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a comprehensive technology-driven highway maintenance framework aimed at improving the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of road infrastructure across the country. The initiative introduces advanced mechanised systems for drainage maintenance, pothole repairs, and road cleaning, marking a significant step toward modernising highway upkeep and enhancing commuter safety.
As part of the new framework, NHAI has issued detailed guidelines mandating mechanised maintenance of drainage systems along National Highways and Expressways, particularly in urban and built-up areas. The move comes ahead of the monsoon season, when efficient drainage management becomes critical for preventing waterlogging and ensuring uninterrupted traffic movement.
The authority has made mechanised cleaning of lined drains compulsory on urban highway stretches. The maintenance operations will involve the use of advanced equipment such as high-flow suction and jetting units, hydraulic grab machines, and dewatering pump sets. These technologies are expected to improve stormwater management capabilities and help reduce flooding risks during periods of heavy rainfall.
In another major development, NHAI has expanded the list of equipment to be deployed under its Performance-Based Maintenance Contracts. The updated framework now includes automatic pothole filling, compacting, and patching machines, along with mechanised road sweeping equipment. The authority has also established a mechanism to evaluate and approve costs associated with the deployment of these technologies in ongoing maintenance projects.
According to NHAI, the introduction of automated systems is intended to strengthen preventive maintenance practices and ensure better compliance with contractual obligations. By reducing reliance on manual processes, the authority aims to achieve faster response times, improved repair quality, and greater operational efficiency across the national highway network.
Automated pothole repair machines are expected to play a particularly important role in preserving pavement quality. These machines can quickly identify, fill, compact, and seal damaged road surfaces, significantly reducing the time required for maintenance activities. Faster repairs not only improve driving comfort but also minimise traffic disruptions and enhance road safety for commuters.
Mechanised road sweeping systems will further contribute to cleaner highways by efficiently removing dust, debris, and waste from road surfaces. Regular cleaning can help improve visibility, extend pavement life, and create a better travel experience for road users.
The technology-driven maintenance framework reflects NHAI’s broader commitment to adopting innovative infrastructure management practices.
