Mysuru Civic Body Orders Action Against Property Tax Defaulters

by Constro Facilitator

The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has directed officials to initiate action against property owners with pending property tax dues and asked taxpayers to clear their arrears promptly. The civic body has reviewed ward-wise details of property tax defaulters and instructed officials to follow the prescribed legal process for recovery of outstanding amounts.

The directions were issued during a special review meeting chaired by MCC commissioner MK Savitha. During the meeting, officials examined details of properties with long-pending tax dues and discussed measures to improve collection and ensure compliance with property tax requirements.

Under the applicable government rules and the 2025 Gazette notification, property tax defaulters are required to receive first, second and third notices as part of the prescribed recovery procedure. The MCC has instructed officials to ensure that these notices are issued to property owners with outstanding dues.

If the outstanding property tax remains unpaid even after the required notices have been served, the civic body may proceed with further legal measures. These measures can include attachment or seizure of property, subject to the provisions of the applicable laws.

Notice Process to Be Completed by September

The MCC commissioner has directed zonal officials to complete the notice-issuance process in all property tax arrears cases by the end of September. Officials will be responsible for identifying properties with pending dues and completing the required stages of notification within the stipulated period.

The move is aimed at strengthening property tax collection and addressing cases where dues have remained unpaid for extended periods. Property tax is an important source of revenue for urban local bodies and is used to support municipal services and other civic functions.

Following completion of the notice process, properties where dues continue to remain unpaid could face further action under the applicable rules. The civic body has indicated that legal measures will be taken in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

Review of Ward-Wise Property Tax Arrears

During the special meeting, officials reviewed property tax arrears on a ward-wise basis. The exercise allowed the civic administration to examine the status of pending payments and identify cases requiring follow-up.

The review also covered the action required against properties where taxes have remained outstanding for a long period. The MCC has asked officials to ensure that the recovery process follows the prescribed sequence of notices before further measures are considered.

The focus on ward-wise monitoring is expected to help municipal officials track pending cases and ensure that notices reach the concerned property owners.

Service Charges From Tax-Exempt Institutions

Apart from property tax arrears, the MCC also reviewed the collection of mandatory service charges from institutions that are exempt from property tax.

The commissioner directed officials to ensure collection of the applicable service charges from such institutions. A detailed review was conducted regarding the status of service-charge collection from various tax-exempt institutions.

The direction forms part of the civic body’s broader review of municipal revenue collection. While certain institutions may receive exemption from property tax under applicable provisions, the MCC has maintained that mandatory service charges are required to be collected where applicable.

The latest directions place emphasis on timely recovery of outstanding property tax and completion of the prescribed notice process. Zonal officials have been given until the end of September to complete the issuance of notices in property tax arrears cases. If the dues remain unpaid after the stipulated process, the MCC will proceed with further action in accordance with the relevant rules and legal provisions.
