The Karnataka government has taken another significant step toward improving housing accessibility for economically weaker sections by extending housing benefits to 427 eligible families in Madikeri taluk under the Basava and Ambedkar Housing Schemes. The initiative reflects the state’s continued commitment to providing safe and permanent housing to underprivileged citizens while promoting inclusive development across rural Karnataka.

Speaking at a programme organized to distribute housing documents to beneficiaries from 18 gram panchayats in Madikeri taluk, Virajpet MLA A S Ponnanna highlighted the government’s focus on ensuring dignity and improved living conditions for the poorest sections of society. He emphasized that affordable housing remains one of the key pillars of the state’s welfare agenda.

According to Ponnanna, the housing initiative received strong support from former Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan. He also acknowledged the contributions of senior state leaders, including Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar, whose efforts helped secure funding for housing projects in the district.

Officials stated that the district has been sanctioned 1,200 houses under various housing programmes. Of these, 527 houses are planned within the Virajpet Assembly constituency. In the first phase of implementation, 427 eligible families across multiple gram panchayats will receive support for constructing permanent homes.

The beneficiaries belong to several villages and gram panchayats, including Peraje, Chembu, Sampaje, Made, Bettageri, Cherambane, Kundacheri, Bhagamandala, Karike, Aiyangeri, Ballamavati, Emmemadu-Napoklu, Kunjila-Kakkabbe, Nariyandada, Hakathur, Mekeri, and Konanjageri. These areas contain many low-income households that have long awaited access to permanent housing facilities.

Madikeri Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Shekhar explained that authorities are working to identify suitable sites for the construction of houses. Once land identification is completed, the district administration will begin the process of developing housing units for the selected beneficiaries. The project aims to provide durable and secure shelters that improve quality of life while supporting social and economic stability in rural communities.

The Basava and Ambedkar Housing Schemes have been instrumental in helping thousands of low-income families across Karnataka secure affordable housing. By targeting vulnerable households and providing financial assistance for home construction, these schemes contribute to reducing housing shortages and enhancing living standards.

The event was attended by District Commissioner S J Somasekhar, Zilla Panchayat CEO Anand Prakash Meena, and Madikeri Taluk Guarantee Implementation Committee Chairman Mandrira Mohan Das, among other officials.

With the first phase now underway, the initiative is expected to bring long-term social benefits to hundreds of families while reinforcing the state’s commitment to inclusive growth and housing for all.
