In an effort to enhance the quality of life, the urban development department plans to transform 57 municipalities into smart cities. These municipalities, mainly located at district headquarters, will be outfitted with digital technologies to optimize administrative operations, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency through the use of CCTV surveillance linked to command and control centers, AI-based civic service management, chatbot-enabled citizen engagement, and integrated management systems for livestock.
The department has successfully established 17 smart cities in accordance with this initiative. The government has allocated a budget of ₹40,000 crore for this endeavor, with an initial funding of ₹145 crore already approved.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated, ‘Our objective is to transform Uttar Pradesh into a benchmark for urban development. By establishing these 57 smart municipalities, we are enhancing infrastructure and fostering inclusive and sustainable growth.’ These municipalities will feature cutting-edge technologies based on the principles of digital governance, advanced urban infrastructure, sustainable practices, and improved services for citizens.
This initiative aims not only to upgrade civic amenities but also to stimulate local economies through increased investments, tourism, job creation, and environmental conservation. Once these municipalities are developed into smart entities, they will provide superior civic amenities and implement measures to mitigate air, water, and noise pollution, alongside solutions for water logging and ensuring a consistent supply of power and water.
Additional amenities in these municipalities will include smart parking, digital management of traffic and lighting, and designated areas for street vendors. The infrastructure development will encompass CC roads, redesigning of junctions, digital libraries, exhibition centers, and auditoriums.
