The Prayagraj administration has initiated plans to develop around 1,200 flats for government employees in Naini and Jhunsi to address the shortage of official accommodation in the city. The proposed housing development is expected to provide government staff with access to dedicated residential units while reducing their dependence on privately rented properties.
The proposal comes at a time when the availability of government quarters in Prayagraj remains limited. Employees working in the Collectorate, Vikas Bhawan and other government offices have been relying on rental housing in different parts of the city. For some employees, this has meant higher housing expenses as well as longer daily journeys between their homes and workplaces.
Under the initial proposal, around 1,200 flats will be developed across Naini and Jhunsi. The administration has selected these areas for consideration because of their proximity to Prayagraj and their road connectivity with important administrative and commercial areas. The locations are also outside the core city, where government-owned land may be available for residential development.
Government Land Being Identified
The project is currently at the land-identification and planning stage. Government departments have been asked to provide details of vacant plots in Naini, Jhunsi and other peripheral areas that could potentially be used for the proposed residential colonies.
The exercise includes identifying the location of government plots, checking ownership details and assessing their suitability for housing development. Once the information is compiled, it will be forwarded to the state government. A detailed construction plan is expected to be prepared after the land assessment and required approvals are completed.
The administration is also keeping the possibility of expanding the proposed housing programme if additional suitable government land is identified in other areas. This could allow the number of flats to increase beyond the initial proposal, depending on land availability and government decisions.
Focus on Government Employee Housing
The proposed housing is intended to address the shortage of official accommodation available to government personnel. Repeated representations from employees have highlighted the need for additional quarters, particularly as existing government housing stock has not been sufficient to meet demand.
With limited government housing in the main urban areas, employees have had to arrange accommodation through the private rental market. The availability of new government flats could reduce this dependence and provide employees with housing linked to their postings.
The choice of Naini and Jhunsi is also linked to the objective of keeping employees within reasonable travelling distance of major government offices. Better access to workplaces could help reduce the time spent commuting, particularly for employees posted in key administrative departments.
Project Yet to Receive Final Approval
The proposed 1,200-flat development has not yet reached the construction stage. The administration is first compiling information on available government land before preparing the detailed project proposal. The plan will subsequently require coordination among the departments concerned and approval from the state government.
Details regarding the size and configuration of the flats, construction cost, implementation schedule and allotment process have not been announced in the proposal available so far.
For Prayagraj, the planned development could add to the city’s government housing stock while making use of vacant government land in Naini and Jhunsi. The project is therefore being considered as a way to address the immediate shortage of official accommodation while supporting residential development in areas connected to the wider city.
