NH-44 highway upgrade approved to cut Hyderabad-Bengaluru travel time

Travel between Hyderabad and Bengaluru by road is anticipated to decrease to approximately five hours, following the Centre’s endorsement to enhance National Highway 44 (NH-44), which connects the two cities.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways(MoRTH) has approved the modernization of NH-44, which traverses Kurnool, Nandyal, and Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The highway will be developed into a six-lane, access-controlled expressway to facilitate better traffic flow and minimize delays. Initially, a new greenfield high-speed corridor was proposed; however, due to elevated costs and challenges related to land acquisition, it was determined that widening the existing route would be a more feasible option.

The improved 576 km segment, covering Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, will include service roads for local traffic, limited access points, and the segregation of local and long-distance vehicles.

Furthermore, the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway is nearing completion, and once it becomes operational, certain regions of Chittoor district will be reachable in just 90 minutes from both cities, with some sections allowing travel to Bengaluru in under an hour.

Designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, the expressway is anticipated to enhance trade, tourism, and regional connectivity across South India.
