GAIL to invest Rs 3,294-cr in 600 MW solar project with BESS in UP

GAIL (India) intends to develop a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, with a projected investment of Rs 3,294 crore. This initiative will feature a co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of approximately 550 MWh, aimed at enhancing grid stability and improving the efficiency of power supply.

The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work is anticipated to be finalized within a span of 15 months. Financing will be secured through a combination of debt and equity, representing a structured strategy for large-scale clean energy investments.

The integrated battery storage system is designed to mitigate the intermittency issues linked to solar energy by storing surplus power generated during peak sunlight hours and delivering it during times of increased demand. This approach will significantly bolster reliability and grid balancing capabilities.

At present, GAIL manages a relatively small renewable portfolio of about 29 MW of solar capacity, making this project a substantial advancement in its transition to clean energy. The investment is in line with India’s broader initiative to expand non-fossil fuel capacity and decrease carbon emissions.
