Chennai; Property tax collection doubled in financial year 2022-23

From a collection of 778 crore in the financial year 2021-22, the Greater Chennai Corporation has doubled its tax collection by collecting 1,408.9 crore this financial year. With a week more to go for the financial year-end, the civic body has set a target of 1,500 crore.

In 2019-20, the civic body collected 928 crore, and during 2020-21, due to Covid-19, it collected 471.6 crore, a lesser collection. The corporation has urged the residents who have not paid taxes to pay immediately.

Out of the 13.33 lakh assesses, a total of 8.85 lakh have paid property tax so far. According to officials, since last week, about 8,000 people paid property tax daily as the financial year is coming to an end.

The residents can pay property tax through the Chennai Corporation website. Officials said they have begun to place name boards at the entrances of buildings of defaulters, reading, “The building owner has not paid property tax for a long time, and has outstanding dues.”

The city corporation named the top hundred property tax defaulters. A firm, R R Info Park, had outstanding dues worth 10.8 crore, followed by Hackbridge, which had dues worth 2.13 crore. Four other defaulters had dues worth in crore.

Similarly, the corporation had also released a list of a hundred property tax-related cases that are ongoing in court. The corporation said it has been fighting cases against several firms including Indian land properties and private limited companies that had dues worth 8 crore.
