Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched a major highway infrastructure package worth ₹3,214 crore in Meghalaya, marking a significant boost to road connectivity and economic development in the northeastern state. The announcement was made during the North East Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition held in New Shillong.

The package includes four new National Highway projects along with the upgradation of two important road corridors. These initiatives are aimed at improving transportation networks, reducing travel time, strengthening interstate connectivity, and supporting regional economic growth. The projects are expected to enhance access to remote areas while facilitating trade, tourism, and movement of goods across Meghalaya and neighboring states.

Speaking at the event, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the occasion as a landmark moment in the state’s infrastructure development journey. He highlighted Meghalaya’s rapid economic progress over the past several years, noting that the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has increased from ₹29,508 crore in 2018 to ₹59,626 crore in FY 2024-25. According to the chief minister, the state has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing economies, supported by rising public investment and infrastructure spending.

Among the key projects announced is the Pynursla Bypass on National Highway 206. The 7.76-kilometre bypass will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹564 crore and is expected to improve traffic flow in the region. Another major project is the 31.5-kilometre Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge–Selsella Road on NH-127B, which has been allocated ₹737 crore. This corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity between Meghalaya and neighboring regions.

The package also includes the Selsella–Goeragre Road project on NH-206, covering 31.7 kilometres with an investment of ₹504 crore. In addition, the proposed Tura Bypass on NH-217 will be developed as a 29-kilometre access-controlled route at a cost of ₹951 crore. The bypass is expected to reduce congestion and improve transportation efficiency in and around Tura.

Apart from new highway construction, two important road improvement projects have also been approved. A 10.67-kilometre stretch of the Shillong–Dawki Road will be upgraded with an investment of ₹351 crore, enhancing connectivity to one of the state’s key tourism and trade routes. Additionally, the 5.44-kilometre Jowai Bypass will be improved at a cost of ₹106 crore to support smoother traffic movement.
