The Centre has released a sum of Rs 1,671 crore for initiating construction of over 8.6 lakh houses under Centre’s flagship PM Awas Yojana- Rural (PMAY-R), the state government said on Tuesday.

The development comes days after the UP rural development department sought funds from the Centre for construction of a fresh batch of houses under the scheme.

A senior official said that deputy CM Keshav Maurya had written to the Centre suggesting construction of 8,62,767 houses under PMAY-R. So far, about 26 lakh houses have been built in Uttar Pradesh under the scheme.

Rural Development commissioner GS Priyadarshi said that the central and state will contribute in the ratio of 60:40 for construction of houses under PMAY-R.

He said that the ministry of Rural Development approved Rs 6,212 crore for more than 8 lakh houses. “The first installment amount of Rs. 1,671 crore has been released for the housing beneficiaries,” he said.
