Bullet Train: 209 Km Track Bed, 190 Km OHE Masts Ready

Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project records progress with 209 km track bed, 452 km piers, tunnel work and electrification.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project has achieved several construction milestones, with work progressing across key sections of the 508-km corridor connecting Maharashtra and Gujarat. The latest update was shared by the Central Government in Parliament through a written reply by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

According to the minister, 209 km of track bed construction has been completed, while 190 km of overhead electrification (OHE) masts have been installed. The project has also recorded substantial progress in civil works, with 452 km of piers constructed and 356 km of girders installed, forming the structural backbone of the elevated high-speed rail corridor.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The corridor will feature 12 stations at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

Construction of the project’s approximately 21-km under-sea tunnel has also advanced. So far, 4.8 km of tunnelling between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra has been completed. The tunnel is one of the most technically challenging components of the high-speed rail corridor.

Significant progress has also been reported on the 97-km Surat–Vapi section, where all major civil works, including river bridge construction, have been completed. In this section, around 86% of the track bed has already been laid, indicating that work is moving steadily toward the track installation stage.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train is India’s first high-speed rail project and is being developed using Japanese Shinkansen technology. Once operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad significantly while improving connectivity, supporting regional economic development, and introducing advanced rail technology to India’s transportation network.

With steady progress in civil engineering, tunnelling, track bed construction, and electrification works, the project continues to move closer to its next phase of track laying and railway systems installation.
