Mohali civic body extends house tax payment deadline to June 30

The excise department building in Sector 69 owes Rs 5 lakh, while post office buildings in Phases V, VII, VIII, X, XI and 3B1 are yet to pay Rs 2 lakh.

The deadline to pay house or property tax without penalty and with 10% rebate was extended till June 30 at a time when the municipal corporation (MC) is to collect Rs 6.5 crore tax from 7,826 defaulters.The police headquarters tops the list with Rs 90 lakh, according to the records of the MC. Sports complexes under Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada) stand second with Rs 50 lakh and are followed by Gmada head office with Rs 25 lakh.

The Forest Bhawan in Sector 68 comes next with Rs 15 lakh. The deputy commissioner’s office follows with Rs 12 lakh. Civil surgeon’s office, including PHS building, too are yet to pay Rs 12 lakh.

The excise department building in Sector 69 owes Rs 5 lakh, while post office buildings in Phases V, VII, VIII, X, XI and 3B1 are yet to pay Rs 2 lakh.

Municipal commissioner Kamal Kumar Garg said, “Property tax is the major source of revenue for the MC, which is now fund starved. Over 50-odd building owners have not paid the dues. The police department owes us money, and so do government-owned Gmada and the civil surgeon’s office. We had issued demi official letters to them in March.”

The police department, Garg said, was refusing to cough up the dues claiming owner of the old complex was responsible for clearing the amount. The department has moved to the new premises in Sector 77. Mohali has 52,678 properties. Of these, 41,082 are residential, 4,929 commercial, 1,683 industrial and 4,984 vacant plots.
